Udyam registration gives your business an official MSME certificate from the Government of India — and it is completely free. If you run a shop, supply services, manufacture products, or work from home, this 15-minute process unlocks bank loans at lower interest rates, government tenders, and MSME-specific schemes.

This guide walks you through every step, the documents you need, the mistakes to avoid, and what to do after you get your certificate.

What is Udyam registration?

Udyam is the official government registration for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) issued by the Ministry of MSME at udyamregistration.gov.in. Think of it as your business identity card from the Government of India.

Once registered, you get a Udyam Registration Number (URN) and a downloadable certificate. This certificate is your proof of MSME status — needed for bank loans, government tenders, subsidies and various schemes.

Who should register?

Any business that meets these criteria:

  • Manufacturing, trading, or service business — shops, freelancers, home businesses all qualify
  • Annual investment in plant and machinery below ₹50 crore
  • Annual turnover below ₹250 crore

Registration is not legally mandatory, but the benefits far outweigh the 15-minute effort. Without it, you cannot access MSME loan schemes or participate in government tenders that require the certificate.

Documents you need

Gather these before you start:

  • Aadhaar card — of the proprietor, partner, or director. Your Aadhaar-linked mobile number must be active for OTP.
  • PAN card — of the business entity. For proprietorship, your personal PAN works.
  • Bank account details — account number and IFSC code of your business bank account.
  • Business address — your shop, office, or home address. Home address is accepted for home-based businesses.
  • NIC code — your industry/activity code. The portal has a search box to help you find the right one.
  • Number of employees — approximate count. Can be zero for brand new businesses.
  • Investment amount — value of plant, machinery or equipment. An estimate is fine.

Step-by-step registration process

Step 1: Open the official portal

Visit udyamregistration.gov.in. Use only this official URL. The portal has a blue government design. Do not use any other website — many copycat sites charge money for this free service.

Step 2: Choose "For New Entrepreneurs"

Click "For New Entrepreneurs who are not Registered yet as MSME". If you previously had Udyog Aadhaar, use the migration option instead.

Step 3: Enter Aadhaar and get OTP

Type your 12-digit Aadhaar number. Click "Validate & Generate OTP". An OTP arrives on your Aadhaar-registered mobile number within 1–2 minutes. Enter it and validate.

Step 4: PAN verification (automatic)

Enter your PAN number. The system automatically verifies it against the Income Tax database. Your name will be pre-filled from Aadhaar.

Step 5: Fill business details

Enter your business name, organisation type (Proprietorship, Partnership, Pvt Ltd etc.), date of commencement, bank account details, NIC code, number of employees, investment amount, district, and social category.

Step 6: Submit and get your certificate

Click Submit and verify with OTP. Your Udyam Registration Certificate is generated immediately. Download the PDF. It contains your URN — keep it safely. You can always re-download from the portal later.

Common mistakes to avoid

Wrong NIC Code

NIC code must match your actual activity. Software services ≠ manufacturing. Wrong code means wrong MSME category and wrong benefits. Search for your activity on the NIC list. When in doubt, call the Udyam helpline: 011-23063288.

Aadhaar mobile number not active

If your Aadhaar-linked mobile is different, old, or inactive, the OTP will not arrive and registration fails. Update your mobile number at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra before applying.

Using unofficial websites

Many copycat websites look official but charge ₹500–₹2000 for the free Udyam certificate. Some also steal your Aadhaar data. Only use udyamregistration.gov.in. If it is not .gov.in, it is not official.

Business name mismatch

If your Udyam name ≠ GST name ≠ bank account name, it causes compliance issues later. Use the identical legal business name across all registrations and your bank account.

What to do after registration

  1. Download and save your certificate — print a copy and keep the PDF safely.
  2. Update your bank account — inform your bank about your MSME status for priority lending benefits.
  3. Apply for GST if needed — if your turnover exceeds ₹40 lakh (goods) or ₹20 lakh (services), or if you sell online.
  4. Check MSME schemes — visit msme.gov.in for current schemes, subsidies and tender opportunities.
  5. Register on GeM — the Government e-Marketplace (gem.gov.in) for government procurement tenders.

Frequently asked questions

Can I register from home?
