Google Business Profile Setup — Get Found on Maps

When someone searches "restaurant near me" or "electrician in Pune" on Google, businesses with a well-set-up Google Business Profile appear prominently in the results. This is possibly the most powerful free marketing tool for any local business — and most owners either do not know about it or have not completed their profile properly.

What is Google Business Profile?

Google Business Profile (GBP) — formerly "Google My Business" — is a free tool that controls how your business appears on Google Search and Google Maps. Your GBP can show: business name, address, phone, hours, website, photos, services, menu, prices, reviews, Q&A, and posts. Customers can call, message, or get directions directly from Google.

Who should set up GBP?

  • Shops, restaurants, clinics, offices — any business with a physical location
  • Service-area businesses — plumbers, electricians, beauticians who travel to clients
  • Home-based businesses — you can hide your home address and show service areas instead

Online-only businesses with no physical location have limited GBP options, but local service businesses benefit enormously.

What you need before starting

  • Google Account (Gmail) — create a dedicated business Gmail for better professionalism.
  • Business name — your official name exactly as shown on your signage. Do not add keywords to the name.
  • Business category — the most specific primary category (e.g., Restaurant, Clothing Store, Electrician).
  • Address or service area — physical address if you have a shop, or service areas if you go to customers.
  • Phone number — business contact number. Can be a mobile number.
  • Business hours — regular weekday and weekend hours.
  • Business photos — at least 10 high-quality photos of your shop, products, and team.

Step-by-step setup process

Step 1: Go to Google Business Profile

Visit business.google.com and sign in with your Google account. Or search "Google Business Profile" on Google.

Step 2: Search for your business first

Type your business name. Check if a listing already exists. If it does, click "Claim this business" instead of creating a new one. Duplicate listings hurt your ranking.

Step 3: Add your business details

If no listing exists: "Add your business to Google" → Select category → Enter business name → Add location (address or service area) → Enter phone number and website URL (optional).

Step 4: Verify your business

Google must verify you are the real owner. Most common: postcard by mail (arrives in 5–14 days with a 5-digit PIN). Some businesses get instant phone or video verification. Do not skip verification — unverified listings have very limited features and visibility.

Step 5: Enter the verification PIN

Once you receive the postcard, log into your GBP dashboard → Enter the 5-digit PIN → Your listing is verified. Or complete video/phone verification if offered.

Step 6: Complete your profile (critical)

Add: Business description (750 characters), services and products with descriptions, additional phone numbers, social media links, business highlights (e.g., "Women-led", "Wheelchair accessible"). A complete profile ranks significantly better than an incomplete one.

Step 7: Add photos and start posting

Upload 10+ photos: exterior, interior, products, team. Create your first Google Post (mini-announcement). Share the review link with happy customers. Respond to every review.

Mistakes that hurt your listing

Adding keywords to business name

Naming your listing "Best Plumber Pune — John Services" instead of "John Services" violates Google's rules and can get your listing suspended. Use only your real, official business name.

Creating duplicate listings

Duplicate listings split your reviews and confuse customers. Both listings rank poorly. Always search for your business before creating. If a duplicate exists, request to merge or claim it.

No photos or very few

Listings with zero or blurry photos get drastically fewer clicks. Upload minimum 10 clear, bright photos: exterior, interior, products, team.

Ignoring customer reviews

Not responding to reviews — especially negative ones — signals to potential customers that you do not care. Respond to every review. Thank positive reviewers. For negative reviews: apologize, explain, offer to resolve.

How to get more Google reviews

  1. Get the short review link from your GBP dashboard → share via WhatsApp after service
  2. Ask verbally: "If you are happy, please leave us a Google review"
  3. Print a QR code linking to your review page at your counter
  4. Add the review link to your email signature and invoices

Never buy or fake reviews. Google detects this and may permanently suspend your listing.

What are Google Posts?

Google Posts are short announcements on your GBP listing — like mini social media posts. Use them for current offers, new products, events, and blog articles. Posts expire after 7 days. Regular posting (2–3 times per week) improves ranking and keeps your listing fresh.

Frequently asked questions

Is Google Business Profile really free?

Yes, 100% free. Creating, verifying, and managing your listing costs nothing. Google Ads (paid search ads) are separate and optional.

I do not have a website. Can I still create a GBP?

Yes. A website is optional. Leave the website field blank or add your Instagram or Facebook page URL. GBP itself serves as a basic online presence.

My business is home-based. Should I show my home address?

You can hide your address. In GBP → Business information → Location → Enable "I deliver goods and services to my customers at their location" → hide address → add service areas. Your home address will not show publicly.

How long does verification take?

Postcard: 5–14 days (sometimes up to 21 days in remote areas). Phone call: instant if offered. Video call: 10–15 minutes live with a Google representative.
